4 Celebrities Driving the Clean Car Revolution

As climate change accelerates and fuel prices remain volatile, electric vehicles (EVs) have quickly gained traction among consumers looking for a more sustainable and cost-efficient way to drive. According to Reuters, global sales of electric vehicles were up by over 25.6% year-on-year in 2024, with incentives and emission targets pushing EV sales in China and the UK.

While brands like Tesla remain leaders in the EV space, manufacturers are constantly expanding their EV offerings to capture a slice of the market. New previews at the 2025 New York Auto Show saw brands like Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and more parade both hybrid and fully-electric models for sedans and SUVs. With availability just around the corner for many of these models, consumers are spoiled for choice.

However, it’s not just about the brands, it’s also about the voices behind them. From city streets to red carpets, the clean energy car revolution is picking up speed, and celebrities are helping steer the way. Stars like poker legend Daniel Negreanu and Hollywood heavyweights Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr. are all embracing EVs not just for their sleek performance, but also for their environmental impact. Here’s a look at how these stars are driving change, both on the road and in the public eye.

Daniel Negreanu

Daniel “Kid Poker” Negreanu is a 7-time WSOP winner, putting him in the same league as fellow WSOP champion and Americas Cardroom pro Chris Moneymaker. While Moneymaker stays busy hosting tournaments and enjoying online poker in California or wherever Americas Cardroom sends him, Negreanu’s ambassador post with GGPoker has made him a fixture on the platform’s cash game stream, Hustler Casino Live.

When Negreanu is away from the poker tables, he dedicates his time to environmental efforts, including switching to a Tesla Model X as a family car. Negreanu is also a proud vegan. In 2015, he posed for a PETA campaign championing the earth-friendly diet and was later credited as an associate producer for a documentary about veganism in sports called The Game Changers (2018).

Leonardo DiCaprio

Leonardo DiCaprio is best known for his powerful performances in films like Titanic (1998) and The Revenant (2015), but off-screen, the Oscar-winning actor has carved out a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most passionate environmental advocates. On a low-key day in Malibu, the A-lister was spotted stepping into his blue Polestar 2, signalling his endorsement of the rising EV brand. DiCaprio has invested in Polestar, a former Volvo sub-brand turned Tesla competitor, further underlining his commitment to clean energy innovation.

Beyond his vehicle choice, DiCaprio has consistently backed environmental causes through his Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, which has funded more than 200 projects across climate science, ocean conservation, and indigenous rights.

Best known for his award-winning roles in films like Good Will Hunting (1998) and Oppenheimer (2024), celebrity news outlets report that Matt Damon is another dedicated EV fan. In fact, per the platform Tork Buzz, Damon helped put the Tesla brand on the map when he was spotted behind the wheel of a 2008 Roadster. His collection only grew from there, and he’s been seen driving both Model S and Model X EVs.

Like the other stars on this list, Damon’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond EV ownership. According to ESG Dive, Damon co-founded the nonprofit firm WaterEquity, which funds projects and companies dedicated to sustainable development, especially those that focus on water stewardship and climate resilience.

Robert Downey Jr

Similar to his billionaire, bad boy, philanthropist persona as Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Robert Downey Jr. is an avid collector of expensive things. However, instead of superpowered robotic suits, RDJ is known for his fleet of classic cars that have been converted into EVs. Interestingly, his car collection was the focus of a 2023 Max docuseries titled Downey Dream Cars Sweepstakes. The series followed RDJ as his fleet of ’60s and ’70s cars was re-engineered and then given away in a sweepstakes charity.

During the year-long sweepstakes, donors received entries based on the amount contributed, with higher donations yielding more entries. All the funds from the sweepstakes benefited the nonprofit environmental advocacy group Downey founded in 2019, FootPrint Coalition. The coalition advances research frontiers and promotes solutions to ensure human and planetary health.

As the world races toward a greener future, these high-profile personalities are proving that sustainability is more than a trend—it’s the road ahead.
