Big & Heavy, Fast & Silent, Emissions-Free & Nothing Like It on the Road

The “Beast” at rest

When GMC introduced the Hummer EV pickup truck in 2022 it raised eyebrows in several ways. Three years later it remains an example of automotive technology to the Nth Degree. Clean Fleet Report usually doesn’t get too wrapped-up in the marketing lingo of the auto companies but when they tagged the Hummer EV pickup as a “Supertruck” who were we to argue?

The 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X is a beast, but one that is easily tamed.

Power and Torque

Power and torque are a big part of the Hummer story. With 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque coming through three motors to drive all four wheels, the Hummer EV makes a statement even before you get behind the wheel. But the question is when would you use and need all that power and oomph?

Clean Fleet Report spent a week in the 2025 Hummer EV 3X pickup testing the massive horsepower and torque, the all-wheel steering, the eye-popping toupée-shifting denture-flying Watts To Freedom mode, and the unique and curious Crab Walk. We spent 515 miles on the freeway and in-town learning how this 9,100 pound beast could become your best friend as an everyday driver.

Performance Excitement

If you have driven any electric vehicle you know the acceleration is fast and quick, with some manufacturers trying to out do each other with the shortest time to 60 or 100 mph. The Hummer EV pickup truck is an interesting vehicle as the horsepower and torque make it a straight-line performance vehicle, which amazes for its weight and size.

Electric propulsion put to use for performance

WTF, or Watts To Freedom, is where the full power of the batteries is unleashed delivering true push-you-back-in-your-seat acceleration. The claimed 3.5 second 0-60 mph time is very believable. WTF mode can be used when not in a drag race (GMC states you are only to use it on a closed course. Un huh.) but it eats-up the battery at a faster rate. While exciting, WTF primarily seems to be a way to win a bar bet that a pickup truck this heavy can go that fast. We don’t recommend using it until you have a full grasp of how the Hummer EV handles and stops, as going that fast, that quickly is a handful.

In our test drive we averaged 1.5 kW per mile, which is a woeful number compared to other EVs Clean Fleet Report has tested. However, none of them weighed 9,000+ pounds and has the on and off-road capability of the Hummer EV. We don’t think Hummer EV owners will be too concerned about efficiency, as long as the battery charges fast and can get that 367 miles of all-electric driving range.

Hitting the Open Road: Smooth and Responsive

The Hummer EV 3X was comfortable and an ease to drive belying its weight and size, in large part due to the air ride adaptable suspension. Long distance trips are very possible so don’t hesitate to take off for a long weekend. The even acceleration, with very useable torque available at any speed, made it a breeze to drive in-town or on the freeway.

Dial up your style

The all-wheel steering feature can be turned off, but we found leaving it on made freeway driving effortless. At 65+ mph the rear steering can’t be sensed, but you know it is there as the 4+ ton Hummer EV smoothly cruises down the road. Southern California freeway surfaces see many miles paved with concrete that has been grooved for water dispersion. This results in tire noise being transmitted into the cabin which is one of our biggest issues when reviewing cars, SUVs and trucks. The Hummer EV isn’t spared this issue but, considering the aggressive tires, there was little harshness or vibrations transmitted into the cabin.

There are five different driver-selectable drive modes of Normal, Off-road, Terrain, Tow/Haul and My Mode. Normal is where 99.9% of most Hummer EV owners will set and leave the mode. The others are self-explanatory when they would be utilized to maximize the driving capabilities, with My Mode allowing for customization to really tweak the system to make it personal.

Each drive mode comes with an artificial engine sound that is pumped through the Bose audio system. In Normal, a barely audible soft note competes with the road noise from the 305/55 Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires mounted on 22-inch wheels. The optional all-season tires are a better choice if going off-road is not why you are buying the Hummer EV. Confidence and comfort, when towing up-to 7,500 pounds, can be increased when selecting the Tow/Haul drive mode setting.

The Hummer EV is perfectly good if primarily driving on paved roads, even though it is big for being a daily egg-and-bread getter. The 4-wheel steering and Crab Walk could come in handy when trying to slip into a tight parking spot at the store, so don’t shy away from using them. At the least, find an empty parking lot and experiment with Crab Walk to see what it can do. Anyway you look at it, it is a blast!

The available Super Cruise offers hands-free driving and has among other features the ability to automatically change lanes. We tried it on the highway at 65 mph and it works, delivering a strange sensation of when approaching a slower vehicle a tap of the turn signal stalk, in the direction you want to go, results in the Hummer EV smoothly passing the vehicle and when it does, returning to the original lane. All this is happening with hands off the wheel. We didn’t use it except for testing the system as we are not sure of its need. Let us know what you think.

Off The Road: A Different Sensation

Terrain, Off-Road, and My Mode are the driver-selectable modes for tackling off-road driving. Each are designed for a specific task to improve traction, throttle control and ride comfort. The all-wheel steering and Crab Walk take an off-road adventure to a different place. The 4-wheel steering shows its technical prowess when a trail gets tight, rocky, or steep. Or all of those at the same time.

Tall tires boost clearance

When negotiating a tight off-road corner in a conventional 4X4, a calculation is made if a three-point turn is needed, or needing to climb over a sharp rock outcropping may be necessary. In our time traversing steep, rutted, rocky and dusty trails, the 4-wheel steering makes it possible to turn through a corner, using the front wheels as the guide, with the rear wheels turning at the same angle. Looking in the side rearview mirrors and seeing the wheels steering and the tail of the truck following along, is a trip.

Eighteen cameras are strategically placed, including two underbody with a front camera lens-wash feature. With a small learning curve avoiding trail hazards such as rocks and tree branches is an easy task, The five skid plates helped too as did the four-corner air suspension to adjust ride height, which GMC calls Extract Mode. When set, an additional six inches of additional height will help clearing brush and rocks.

Fast to charge, too

Charging

Whether it be driving on or off-road the Hummer EV’s massive 210 kWh lithium-ion battery ($9,995 option) needs to be charged. When driving, charging is accomplished through regenerative braking that converts kinetic energy into electric energy when applying the brakes or coasting, and stores it in the battery.

Plugging-in is the way to go to get the full driving range out of the Hummer EV using the 19.2 kW on-board charger.

Level 2  240V – Adds 16 miles in an hour; 20-100% in 16.5 hours

Level 3  480V/DC Fast Charging – Add 100 miles in 12 minutes; 20-80% in 42 minutes

Unique Interior

The Infinity Roof, made up of three sky panels, brings back memories of the Pontiac Firebird from the 1970s and 1980s. These panels snap in and out easily, and come with a padded protective case that neatly stores in the front trunk, or frunk. When the panels are removed, back country driving with the sky and wind engulfing you and up-to four passengers, will be a thing to experience. When the panels are in place, and even though they are heavily tinted, heat still transfers into the cabin. Without a shade, it gets hot, so other than always wearing a hat on sunny days another option is buying some black fabric and Velcro it to the ceiling.

Squared off

The well laid-out interior has geometric design points. The vertical dash air vents mimic the tail light design, while the instrument cluster, infotainment screen and dash section in front of the passenger are all horizontal, as are the door inserts. The seats and center console and large exterior mirrors continue the block look. It grows on you, and is all very functional. One thought is if you will be doing a lot of muddy or dusty off-roading, the white in the white and black two-tone interior color scheme may be an issue. Or maybe you are the cleanest off-roader ever, and a white interior is just fine?

The 14-speaker Bose sound system has FM, SiriusXM, USB ports, Spotify and other entertainment apps built in. The sound system has AudioPilot that automatically adjusts and compensates for exterior noise, Counterpoint that converts music into multiple channels, SurroundStage that optimally places the listener in the center of the music and Active Sound Management that is where the sounds come from when selecting the drive modes.

GMC is having some fun with Easter Eggs in the cabin. Make sure to checkout the speaker covers and floor mats that are adorned with a map of the moon’s Sea Of Tranquility, the cargo area features a map of the moon’s surface and when changing drive modes there are graphics that show the Hummer EV driving on the Moon and Mars. Overall, while comfortable and the sight-lines are good, there is a lot of plastic that doesn’t jibe with the $110,000+ price tag.

How do you define excess?

Familiar Design

Old and new blended

The Hummer EV doesn’t stray far from the last Hummer we saw in 2022 as it is big. The boxy shape, with a high ride height and large wheels and tires continues to the current version. Maybe the three windshield wipers is an indication of the width?

GMC designers took that familiar look and updated it with LED lighting front and rear, softer corners and the MultiPro tailgate. Access to the box is made possible by the tailgate that drops down in one piece; has two built-in load stops; has a section that drops way so you can stand even closer to the box and your cargo; a section that drops to create a full-width step; and lastly for a cool factor, the gate has a built-in Kicker audio system that runs off a flash drive.

The Hummer EV doesn’t have a spare tire, so if you want to have one for that just-in-case off-road moment, it will need to be stored in the bed.

Crab walking away

Observations: 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X Pickup

The 2025 GMC Hummer EV 3X is a truck you should want to drive at least once as it is like nothing else on the road. For that matter, it is unlike anything Clean Fleet Report has ever reviewed. But will you need to own it?

Goal: The most capable EV

It is extravagant in so many ways. Doing the Crab Walk, Watts to Freedom and hands-free highway lane changes are all cool, but most owners will rarely use them r they’ll end-up being parlor tricks and bragging points. Maybe even gimmicks.

GMC is fine with that because, as they told us: “We had one goal for Hummer EV: Build the most capable factory truck—ever.” From our short time driving the Hummer EV there is no argument they have done it, and it is electric. No diesel or giant V8 gas-guzzler in sight.

If the on-road performance, off-road capability and price tag don’t elicit the same reaction, then the Hummer EV probably isn’t for you. GMC knows the Hummer EV pickup truck won’t appeal to everyone, but sales have increased in its two years on the market from 2,460 in 2023 to 12,257 in 2024, with availability being the biggest factor in the sales increase. There isn’t any way to do the Hummer EV justice with words and photos, so visit your local GMC dealer and check it out yourself.
